Heat stress in non-ferrous foundries.
نویسنده
چکیده
In a previous paper (Turner, 1957) the results of a survey of the thermal environments in non-ferrous foundries were reported, reference was made to the index of heat stress proposed by Belding and Hatch (1955), and an indication was given of how this index could be used to evaluate the severity of the heat stress which might be encountered in foundries. A few observations were reported which showed that the required rate ofheat loss by evaporation which was predicted by the index was in fair agreement with the rate observed in a sample of foundry workers. It has been the purpose of the present study to investigate more closely the correlation between the predicted and observed rates of heat loss by evaporation under typical industrial conditions and to examine the applicability of the heat stress index for the assessment of such conditions.

A study of the thermal environment in non-ferrous foundries.
Foundries where non-ferrous metals are cast are often very hot and it is not uncommon in the height of summer for a foundry to be closed shortly after midday because conditions become too hot for sustained work. This survey of typical working environments in such foundries was made at the request of a Joint Standing Committee of the Ministry of Labour and National Service consisting of represen...
متن کاملAnalysis of total metals in waste molding and core sands from ferrous and non-ferrous foundries.
Waste molding and core sands from the foundry industry are successfully being used around the world in geotechnical and soil-related applications. Although waste foundry sands (WFSs) are generally not hazardous in nature, relevant data is currently not available in Argentina. This study aimed to quantify metals in waste molding and core sands from foundries using a variety of metal-binder combi...
متن کاملCooling garments—A review
Thermal discomfort is one the major challenges during work in hot and/or humid environments like mines, foundries and arid/desert regions. Heat and moisture management is the key to prevent the workers from heat stress. Personnel protective garments alone are not sufficient to provide thermal neutrality. Auxiliary cooling garments are required to aid the process of human body cooling. This revi...
متن کاملEnhancing Maintenance Practices at a Casting Foundry: Case Study
This research study sought to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the current maintenance practices at a sand casting manufacturing company which is principally a ferrous foundry producing grey and white iron. The work suggested good practices which could be taken on board and others which could be improved on. The generated recommendations can be used by other foundries to enhance their ...
متن کاملPulmonary fibrosis in non-ferrous foundry workers.
Much has been written about fume fever (brass caster's ague, zinc chills, zinc shakes), and lead poisoning in brass foundries has been dealt with recently by Stalker (1947) and Hamlin and Weber (1947), but the references to pulmonary fibrosis amongst non-ferrous foundry workers are few. Stalker wrote that " the incidence of advanced silicosis has been generally low among [brass] foundrymen ". M...
